How it works

How it works:

• Water is stored at the base of the planter in a reservoir.

• The inner pot sits in this reservoir, gradually drawing water up to the plant roots.

• As the water in the reservoir is depleted, the indicator will lower - showing you exactly how much water is left.

• When it hits the bottom, your plant is asking for a refill.

• We've designed it to ensure the growing material doesn’t get too wet, maintaining the right balance of water and air to create the ideal conditions for strong, healthy root growth.

Using with soil:
• We recommend using the platform insert and nylon wick with soil, for optimal water and air balance.

• Add your plant and soil into the clear pot, and add water to the outer pot.

• Water is wicked up through the nylon wick and into the soil. As the plant uses the water, the indicator on the front of the planter will gradually lower. Once it hits the bottom its time to refill the pot with water.

Using with semi-hydro:
• Our planters are also great for semi-hydro (soil-free) growing materials. Use with leca, lechuza pon, perlite or pumice.

• We recommend removing the platform insert when growing with these materials, for a better balance of water and air. The soil-free material will sit directly in the water reservoir and act as the wick.

• After planting the process is much like soil, but you'll need to add nutrients to the water since semi-hydro materials lack them.

FAQ

What plants can grow in the planter?

Almost any plant can grow in a Wavyleaf planter. The planter is designed to be flexible, allowing you to tailor watering to your plant's needs.

Here are some examples of how you could use the planter for different plants:

Water loving plants: refill the reservoir as soon as the indicator reads empty, so the plant always has some water.

Water sensitive plants: after the indicator reads empty, allow the growing material to dry completely (wait 3-7 days) before refilling.

There’s no single way to use the planter—it gives you the clarity and control to adapt your care based on your plant's needs.

You can grow houseplants, herbs, and veggies using the growing medium you prefer, whether it’s soil or soil-free options like leca or pon.

If you’re wondering about a specific plant, feel free to email us—we’re happy to help!

Will this cause overwatering?

Overwatering is caused by excess water suffocating the roots, cutting off their oxygen supply and leading to root rot.

Wavyleaf planters are designed to maintain a nice balance of water and air, to help roots get the oxygen they need to avoid root rot. The inner pot has multiple vents along the bottom and sides to promote airflow to the roots.

If you're concerned about overwatering for water-sensitive plants, try filling the reservoir partway to reduce the watering duration. You can also wait 3-7 days after the reservoir runs empty before refilling, giving the plant time to adjust.

What about plants that need a dry cycle?

The planters are designed to provide a nice balance of water and air, but for water sensitive plants that require a completely dry cycle, simply wait 3–7 days after the indicator reads empty before refilling the reservoir. This ensures the growing material fully dries before the next watering.

How long does it water for?

Watering typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks, depending on factors such as:

- Plant size: Bigger plants use water faster.

- Sunlight: More sun means quicker water use.

- Humidity: Dry air causes faster evaporation.

- Temperature and airflow: Warm or breezy conditions deplete water faster.

No More Guessing

I have an amazing trailing philodendron growing in pon, placed on a shelf, not easily reachable. It was always a guessing game when to water due to the type of container the plant was in. After seeing this container on IG, I knew this was the perfect solution. The visible window tells me when to grab the step stool, which has consistently been every 3 weeks. I'll definitely be buying more. The packaging is so beautiful. Great product Wavyleaf!
